Developed and run at Canning libraries the ABCD English early years programme helps young children develop their English language skill before they start school. Using talking singing, reading and play, our staff and wonderful volunteers engage with multicultural families in Canning boosting confidence in kids while providing a great place to create social connections. Attendee Lucia says “ABCD English provides a safe environment for kids to learn English. My son’s social skills have improved a lot, he is also now able to speak in front of other people.”
Throughout the 10 week programme, many fun and interesting themes are covered including Human Body, Family, Weather, Numbers, Colours, Alphabet, Food, Animals, Feelings, Transport and Daily Routines. Modelled off a kindergarten class, a typical session begins with a warm welcome song and a Storytime before moving into facilitated activities, craft and free play. These different elements provide a variety of learning opportunities and help to reinforce new vocabulary and learning.
Since the programme launch in October 2019, we have loved seeing the growth as families participate in the program. Children have become more independent, built confidence and developed social skills – in addition to improving their language skills!
The ABCD English programme is aimed at children aged 3-5 and their families who speak English as an Additional Language. If you would like to find out more about this programme visit www.canning.wa.gov.au/abcdenglish
